America is undergoing a major transformation. The mental health disability movement is one that discourages hard work, and encourages mass dependency on what is, in essence, a government parent. Entitlement programs have arisen from a distorted form of humanism. In many cases disability income reinforces mental illness, and decreases the recipients’ capacity to live a fulfilling life. Dr. Klein provides a scholarly, readable, and hard-hitting illustration of the human mind, entitlement programs, and the incongruous connection that has linked the two. Entitlement spending has become an ironic state of affairs. Farewell To Bootstraps presents a gripping psychological argument as to why entitlement systems need drastic reformation, and in some cases elimination. This is a book that should be read by every member of congress, by those working and studying in the mental health field, and by anyone interested in understanding one of the most paramount issues of 21st century America.

To put it briefly, this is an absolute top quality read in more ways than one.

What I admire about the author, Lucas Klein, is that he does a great job of keeping the book sophisticated and detailed, yet it is still ultimately a smooth read that has a vibe that is far from feeling 'chore-like' or boring in any way (to the layman, such as myself). Although the topic itself is one that I can't say I was too familiar with before stumbling upon this book, I am ultimately very happy that I decided to give it a chance as it has really opened my eyes to the state of the relationship between mental health and the government and it has left me pondering the issues long after I finished the read.

It's not hard to tell that the author is truly a professional and competent with what he chooses to discuss, and this is evident even very early on in the book. Solid facts and observations are expressed through a clear, concise writing style that I found easy to understand and make sense of. The layout isn't 'textbook-esque', but more so expressed in a format that seems to be based upon an argument and thoughts with a solid foundation and background that includes many personal experience, yet still without a strong prerequisite bias forcing the direction or dictating the writing.

Overall, the book has left me more than impressed and I am sure that I will be giving it a reread in the future.

Great read. This needs to be read by the upcoming generation. Whatever happened to hard work and rewards?
I have been worried about the growing entitlement problem in America for years, ever since I lived in Vermont in the 90s and the state began financially rewarding young mothers for having additional children. No surprise, the welfare rate boomed. It seems that every state has followed through. Yet every time I spoke up in my crowd of friends or family it was like people didn't want to talk about the problem. I found this book to be my voice, and Dr. Klein stated things so succinctly that I feel I have a new set of ideas to use for conversations with "intellectuals" now. The book is divided into 2 parts. Part I is mostly clinical and philosophical, setting you up for the the political Part II. I think this is a must read, and it should be read first by congress and then by every social studies program in the country.
"Pull yourself up by your bootstraps" is perhaps a long forgotten action a person can take to build and rebuild themselves when facing difficulties reach down and pull yourself up! "Farewell to Bootstraps" illustrates how our U.S. entitlement system nurtures dependency and promotes disability claims for mental health symptoms that many others who are in the workforce deal with yet function. Bootstraps calls for reform, not by simple denial of assistance, but by installing a system that understands incentive and a healthy need for purpose and responsibility. It is time America.
