Not only does Tommy have to deal with the loss of his mother in a tragic car accident while he recovers from grave injuries himself, he has to come to terms with who his father is the commander of a space ship that has a job like something out of Star Trek's Prime Directive manual. This would be tough enough, but he really doesn't fit in for so many reasons. When an attack is made on him, I wondered if this would be a bullying book. Nope. Much more.

This is not a book for people who want to be on the edge of their seat with their heart pounding in their mouth as they flip pages until 3am. It is thoughtful and carefully developed. Debbie Brown does a very clear job of building worlds--both familiar and alien--and the cultures that go with them. Some of the paradigms she created sparked interesting conversations with my kids. Brown also knows how teens think, as evidenced in the depth of the main character, Tommy. She captures a wide range of emotions without being melodramatic about it. I appreciated that this wasn't a superficial teen hero.

On that slower pacing thing... It didn't bother me once I settled into the rhythm because I'm from a generation that is used to reading more exposition. Because the action wasn't hurried most of the time, I didn't feel in a rush to finish it, and yet I wanted to know what was going to happen in these very interesting settings. By the end of it all, however, we definitely are cheering for Tommy to come back in the next book and make a good fight to save Earth, so the urgency arrived. (Not giving spoilers here.)

Basically, if you're looking for mega-exciting science fiction adventure with all kinds of suspense and action, this may not be a top pick. If you're looking for thought-provoking, detailed imaginary worlds with some characters you can care about, it's solid. Your reaction will depend on what you prefer.
Imagine you find out your dad is an alien. That’s how the story opens up, with Tommy being whisked away from Earth by his alien father. Culture shock takes on a whole new meaning! This story follows Tommy as he adapts to his new family, life on a spaceship and the adventures all that entails. This is not an edge-of-your-seat sort of Sci-Fi adventure, but there’s enough action to keep the reader’s interest. There’s a number of unanswered questions, which I presume the sequel, as well as the prequel, would address. I’d recommend this for teens who enjoy Science Fiction.
I admit when I first picked up Amethyst Eyes I was expecting your typical coming of age story, ie boy losses parent, is taken in by his other parent, meets new people, and must make sense of it all. Got all that? Good. Sounds simple enough, right? Nuh uh. That's what I thought and I was wrong.

Debbie Brown did a masterful job of taking young Tommy and all of those time honored traditions and made them fresh and exciting. When Tommy's mother is killed in an auto accident, he's taken in by his father and learns there's far more to his life and the history of humanity than he would've ever imagined. Not only is Tommy put into a strange place to find himself, he must also do so aboard a space ship with a secret cult hunting him for his amethyst eyes.

I found the story compelling in that I'm a sucker for a good old fashioned tale, but when you throw in science fiction and it's written well I'm hooked.
Tommy doesn't remember his father. He was two when his father left. His mom tells him that his father still loves them, but he can't be with them. When Tommy's mother tragically dies in a car wreck, Tommy's Dad comes to care for him. That's when Tommy's life changes completely.

Tommy is whisked away to a space ship and Tommy realizes that his father and everyone on the ship is an alien...and he is half alien! His mother never prepared him for this. Because he is half-alien and half-human, Tommy feels like an outcast. He is even bullied by some of the other kids on the ship. They don't understand his way of life even though he is trying hard to understand theirs.Tommy's father loves him very much and helps him to fit in and feel at home and Tommy wants to make this new place his home, but can a half-human kid show the others on the ship that his ways aren't so different? Tommy also learns of another danger and it has to do with his amethyst-colored eyes - eyes like his fathers. Beings with eyes like Tommy's have reason to fear for their lives!

This book had a very interesting plot. The story was cool. I really liked how it had a bunch of high-tech gadgets and technology in it. Tommy was the best main character I could want in a book. He was brave, kind, smart and knew how to stand up to bullies. There is some violence but nothing graphic. There's a creepy part to the plot where these evil aliens want to capture Tommy for his eyes, but it isn't told in detail and it is only a small part of the plot.I thought the cover art wasn't the greatest because it's so dark (you can't see it too well). The trailer is at the bottom of this post and it's pretty hard to see too (or at least I think so). I liked how Ms. Brown described Earth and the alien world so well. It was interesting that both worlds had good and bad points. On Earth you have a lot of freedom and can choose to do what you want but there was sickness and violence. On the spaceship, there was no sickness (and supposedly no violence but there still was) but you were pretty much told what to do and what job you would have. It is an awesome action book and has a great message about fitting in.
