This book is really informative! It is rather short, but concise. I was truly amazed to learn some of the things that newborns are capable of. Like most people, I just thought they were blobs who needed help with everything and didn't react until several weeks after birth.

A previous reviewer complained about the focus on women's breasts, but really it was only the one section which was discussing the infants ability to find the breast, latch on and begin nursing on its own during the first hour after birth. Besides, a book on newborns is going to have pictures of breasts and breastfeeding babies.

I'm really glad I purchased this book, plus it will help fill the time between contractions at the hospital.

I'm required to read this for my Doula certification. Super easy read and even great to read as new parents!
Newborn was my favorite and most immediately helpful relevant and useful book in my collection. I read it when I was pregnant and when my new baby was napping and it was great guidance! It has lovely pictures and descriptions of newborns with all of their miraculous skills, instincts and reflexes. It shows an hour-old infant boldly rooting his way to breast and latching on without assistance for the first feeding. Explains what is happening in the brain, the limits of the focus range and attention span in early days, the different mental states like quiet alert etc, shows how the baby interacts, what they need and why they look so funny. I cant recommend it highly enough for a new mama. The rest of your baby books wont be useful for a few months. THIS IS THE ONE YOU WANT NOW!
This is such a great book to read towards the end of your pregnancy to help you understand infant communication and behavior. If you already have a baby, don't waste your time reading--- sleep.

I bought a copy for my OB to have in his office waiting room, such a great read!
This book has interesting information about newborns. Things I never knew. Helped me figure my newborn easier. I suggest getting a used one as this book has not been updated in about 15 years.
Much of the book comprises of photographs. The photographs are disappointing and need to be updated - They are old and not very high quality.
This is a great and helpful book for learning about your newborn. Its not that long to read and provides valuable and helpful information for new parents. I would recommend this to those that have a newborn.
I read this after delivering my son, when sleep & time are rare. I got through it in a timely manner & it made me really appreciate my son & his experience in the new world.
